Tagging along with Morten Westergård and Trygve Markset – taking the shortest route from Oslo to Hardangervidda. The boys left the office in Oslo at 2 pm. and made to Vemork by 5.30 pm. (some traffic and grocery shopping included). From Vemork they took Krossobanen tramway from the valley and up to the Hardangervidda plateau.
Krossobanen, made in 1928, was created for this simple reason; “when the sun couldn’t reach the people, the people would have to be taken to the sun.”
Krossobanen Tramway.
From the top of Krossobanen, the boys hauled their sleds for a couple of hours and made camp close to Hellgberghytta (named after DNT legend and saboteur, Claus Helberg). Full moon, no wind and clear skyes made this short hike quite memorable.
“A weekend adventure has the spirit of a big adventure, it is just condensed into a couple of days. Even people living in big cities are not far away from small pockets of wilderness.”
